Biography:

Dr G Breukelman is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Human Movement Science, Faculty of Science and Agriculture at the University of Zululand. He has worked in the Department of Human Movement Science at the University of Zululand since 2010 and Over these years, he has been teaching, doing research, administration and many other duties that was required of me to perform. Breukelman has gained valuable experience that continued to add value to the Department, Faculty and the University at large. He developed professionally as an academic, contributing in teaching, research, administration and in community engagement, all these duties form part of the core business of the University of Zululand. 

He also has contributed in research through publications, collaborations, attending both national and international conferences, been a Session Chair at an international conference, supervised postgraduate students (honors, masters and PhD’s), Dr Breukelman has been an external examiner (honours and masters) and also contributed to the service of the University e.g. health and safety committee; gym committee; health and safety representative for the University of Zululand’s Richards Bay Campus and Faculty Research Ethics Subcommittees and Chair. He has acted as Head of Department (HOD), if the HOD was absent, been the Honours in Human Movement Science (Biokinetics)- and National Diploma in Sport & Exercise Technology Coordinator, thus carrying out more of the management duties in the department. Apart from having a PhD, He has attended and completed different workshops hosted by the University of Zululand and external institutions/companies i.e. Extended learning – Assessing learning in higher education (UKZN); Doctoral research training programme (Stellenbosch University); Strengthening Postgraduate Supervision course; etc. which all assisted me in being a better academic and researcher.

Dr Gerrit Breukelman is an enthusiastic, friendly and hardworking person with a passion for people, sport and health, who believe in himself. He positive and strive to reach goals that he set out for himself. He is loyal and self-confident. He like planning ahead, but can think on his feet. He work well in a team and enjoy taking initiative to lead a project if need be.

He enjoy teaching in the field of Biokinetics and Sport Science and strive to deliver a high quality of work. His aim is to grow his own knowledge as new research is constantly conducted. He enjoy research and supervising student research projects. He objective is to increase his research outputs. He is currently conducting his PhD.H

Research interests: 

Health promotion; Non-communicable diseases; Exercise rehabilitation; Isokinetic testing and rehabilitation. I have done research on the effects of the low carbohydrate, high fat diet on Type 2 diabetics.
