About Us

The Department of Nursing Science was initiated in 1981.  We have a state of the Art Clinical Skills Laboratory which has high fidelity simulation dolls, for students to use to practice clinical skills in a safe environment.

The Nursing Department of Science offers a Bachelor of Nursing Degree, a Bachelor Curationis Education and Administration Degree, a research Master of Nursing Degree and a research Doctor of Nursing Degree.

The undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing curriculum comprises major topics such as Fundamental Nursing, General Nursing, Mental Health Nursing and Community Health Nursing. These topics are informed by the Bachelor of Nursing curriculum of The South African Nursing Council (SANC) regulation 425. The Bachelor of Nursing Degree is accredited by the SANC, The Council for Higher Education and the South African Qualifications Framework (SAQA).

The Department offers a dedicated undergraduate simulation laboratory where lectures and practical sessions are held.

As a result of our student’s exposure to real and simulated clinical practice, our graduates are competitive in the job market.

We also offer post-graduate programmes with a Bachelor Curationis Education and Administration (BCur E et A), research Master of Nursing and research Doctor of Nursing Degrees.

Research in the Department is conducted to answer South Africa’s priority research areas, and research in the use of high fidelity teaching in a clinical skills laboratory, Malaria, HIV, Midwifery and Diabetes are in progress.
