Biography:
Dr Zoliswa Mbhele is a lecturer in the Department of Botany at University of Zululand

Research interests:
Dr Mbhele is specializing in variation studies of indigenous fruit trees and neglected and underutilized crops (NUC), with a particular focus on their morphological, nutritional, and genetic diversity. Her research primarily explores how these variations influence the adaptability, conservation, and potential utilization of indigenous fruit species and crops. This research integrates comprehensive analyses of physical traits (morphology), nutrient composition, and genetic makeup to understand the ecological and economic significance of indigenous fruit trees and crops. This holistic approach supports efforts to preserve biodiversity, promotes the sustainable use of these species for food security, community livelihoods and highlights the importance of indigenous fruits and neglected underutilized crops in addressing nutritional gaps and fostering resilient agricultural systems.
