In iLembe District, KwaZulu-Natal – 18 June 2026 – More than 1,000 learners and unemployed graduates gathered at Khanyisa Secondary School on Thursday, 18 June 2026, for the BRICS iLembe Career Expo Summit, held under the theme “Future-Oriented Career Expo Summit: Empowering Rural Youth Through Scarce Skills Development.”
The summit brought together educators, industry professionals, government representatives, higher education institutions, and community leaders to expose young people to a wide range of academic pathways, career opportunities, and scarce skills fields that can shape their futures beyond matric.
Learners from seven schools across the iLembe District, ranging from Grades 8 to 11, participated in the event alongside unemployed graduates seeking information on further education and career development opportunities. Through interactive exhibitions, career guidance sessions, and expert presentations, attendees gained valuable insights into various professions, study options, and the qualifications required to pursue them.
A key highlight of the summit was the attendance of Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nomusa Dube-Ncube, who delivered the keynote address. Speaking to learners, she encouraged them to pursue tertiary education and equip themselves with the skills needed to succeed in an evolving economy. Dr Dube-Ncube also commended participating institutions and exhibitors, including the University of Zululand, for their dedication to empowering young people through education and career guidance initiatives.
The programme featured an Industry-Specific Insights Speaker Series, where experts shared information about career opportunities in high-demand sectors. Ms Zama Dlamini from the Moses Kotane Research Institute introduced learners to opportunities within the research sector, while Ms Fatima Khan from Focus Air Flight School highlighted career pathways in aviation. Their presentations broadened learners’ understanding of scarce skills professions and showcased opportunities available within these industries.
The summit also hosted a Social Impact Speakers Session, focusing on youth empowerment, financial literacy, and social responsibility. Ms Nkosi, Provincial Manager at Higher Health, addressed learner wellbeing and support services available to young people. Miss Mdluli from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) encouraged active citizenship and civic participation among youth. Mr Mngadi, Youth and Students’ Specialist at ABSA, provided practical advice on financial management and budgeting, while Ms Matomela, Outreach Officer at NSFAS, informed learners about student funding opportunities and financial planning for higher education.
Representing the University of Zululand’s Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering were Mr Prince Sokhela from the Department of Botany and Ms N.T. Makhoba from the Department of Nursing Science. Their participation formed part of the university’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and promoting higher education opportunities in rural communities. Through direct interaction with learners, they provided information on academic programmes, admission requirements, bursary opportunities, and career prospects, encouraging young people to make informed decisions about their educational journeys.
The BRICS iLembe Career Expo Summit successfully created a platform for learners to engage with professionals from diverse sectors, explore future career possibilities, and gain the knowledge needed to navigate educational and employment opportunities in an increasingly competitive world. Organisers hailed the event as a significant step towards empowering rural youth and equipping them with the skills and information necessary to contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s future economy.
