The Department of Computer Science at the University of Zululand proudly represented the institution at the uMzumbe Career Expo Summit, held on 23 April 2026 at Mthwalume Enkanini Sports Ground under the theme, “Empowering Rural Youth with Scarce Skills.”

The impactful outreach event brought together approximately 800 Grade 12 learners from schools across the uMzumbe district and surrounding areas, creating an important platform to expose rural youth to opportunities in technology, engineering, and other critical scarce skills sectors.

Representing the Department of Computer Science were five delegates, including academic staff members Ms Happiness Zulu and Mr Thamsanqa Ndlovu, alongside postgraduate students Mr Mphilo Rwarinda, Ms Njabulolo Khuzwayo, and Mr Mphilo Buthelezi. Their participation underscored the department’s commitment to community engagement and its mission to inspire future generations to pursue careers in science and technology.

The summit commenced with a welcome address by the Mayor of uMzumbe Municipality, Cllr Bongani Nyuswa, who emphasised the transformative power of education and the importance of rural development in shaping South Africa’s future.

Dr Sunshine Myende, Executive Chairperson of the National Youth Development Agency, delivered an inspiring address, sharing insights from his personal journey in academia and government while encouraging learners to pursue excellence through education.

Mrs Mseleku further motivated learners—particularly young women—to break barriers by entering historically male-dominated sectors such as engineering, mining, technology, and skilled trades. She stressed the importance of choosing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects during secondary school to build a strong academic foundation.

The keynote address was delivered by Her Royal Highness Queen Nomzamo kaMyeni-Zulu, who highlighted her dedication to community upliftment and social development across KwaZulu-Natal. Through her foundation, Sizawakha Okazulu, she continues to champion women empowerment, cultural heritage promotion, and social support initiatives aimed at improving communities throughout the province.

Following the formal programme, the University of Zululand delegation actively engaged with learners, teachers, and parents, providing valuable guidance on academic programmes and career pathways available within the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering, as well as broader opportunities across the university.

This interaction played a significant role in raising awareness about higher education and empowering learners to make informed career choices. The expo also featured other higher education institutions, including Mangosuthu University of Technology, Durban University of Technology, and UNISA.

The Department of Computer Science’s presence at the summit reflects the University of Zululand’s ongoing commitment to educational outreach, rural development, and equipping young people with the knowledge and confidence needed to thrive in scarce skills sectors.
