Welcome message

Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering invites postgraduate students and staff studying towards an honours, MSc, or Doctoral degrees to submit abstracts for oral presentations during the Annual Postgraduate Symposium to be co-hosted by the departments of Chemistry and Physics on 18 October 2024, at the UNIZULU main campus. The symposium will hosted under the theme ” Advancing science through multidisciplinary and Afrocentric approaches “. This faculty-wide postgraduate symposium will highlight how multidisciplinary scientific approaches have responded/ are responding to the current challenges faced by Africa and/ or the world. The research should demonstrate how can we address the emerging challenges/ issues? What are the impacts of these global issues if left unaddressed? Are there technologies/ practices that can be adopted to cope with the issues? What guidelines and recommendations can we develop concerning these global societal issues? The topics should cover, but are not limited to the following:

  • Food security
  • Climate change
  • Indigenous knowledge-based systems
  • Energy security
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Nanotechnology
  • Drug development
  • Water treatment
  • And other topics that could be of interest to the audience
The 2024 Faculty of Science, Agriculture, and Engineering Postgraduate Symposium promises to be both stimulating and informative, with a combination of presentations from keynote speakers, students and staff from the University of Zululand studying towards an honours, MSc, or Doctoral degrees.

        N/B: There will be prizes for best paper and poster papers plus 2 runners up for the categories (honours, master’s and doctoral)

 Presenters will be allocated 15 minutes for the entire presentation (10 minutes to deliver the talk/ presentation and 5 minutes to engage the audience).

Guidelines

Abstract submission 

  •  Title of the abstract should be in 14-point Arial font size.
  •  List each author’s Surname, initials, and affiliation (standard journal formatting).
  • The structure of the abstract should follow the suggested components (see Table).
  • Abstracts text must be in English (South Africa).
  • Should be free of spelling, grammatical and typographic errors (consider English
    editorial).
  • Must be typed in Microsoft (MS) Word processor, with 12-point Arial font size.
  • Single line spacing, aligned on both sides (text distributed evenly – justified left/right).
  • A4 size or 8.5” × 11” document (default) margins.
  • Maximum of 300 words.
Poster submission
  •  The recommended poster size display is A1 size, that is 594 x 841 mm or 59.4 x 84.1
    cm, which is 23.4 x 33.1 inches.
  • Include the abstract title, author and co-author details/names, and the affiliation/
    institution(s) in your poster.
  • Include correspondence e-mail address, and phone details at the top of the poster.
  • It is suggested that your poster covers the following headings/ components:
    Title/ Introduction/ background/ Aim/ objectives/ Methods/ Results/ Conclusions
  • Recommendations, where applicable.
  • Acknowledgments, if any.
