On the 7th April of 2026 in Moses Kotane Research Institute Offices, Durban, The University of Zululand (UNIZULU) and the Moses Kotane Research Institute (MKRI) convened a strategic alignment and collaboration meeting aimed at strengthening partnerships and identifying joint research opportunities that address key socio-economic challenges in KwaZulu-Natal.
UNIZULU. Representatives from the Department of Computer Science included Dr Paul Tarwireyi, Ms Zibuyisile Magubane, and Mr Sakhile Fatyi, while the Department of Physics was represented by Professor Cebo Ndlangamandla, Dr Getachew Mengistiem, and Mr Nhlakanipho Khanyile.
The session provided a structured platform for engagement, enabling both institutions to present overviews of their current and planned projects. Discussions focused on identifying areas of mutual interest and alignment, with an emphasis on collaborative research initiatives and institutional support.
A key highlight of the meeting was a presentation by Dr Mthunzi Khonjelwayo, who is in Research and Development Acting Executive who outlined priority focus areas impacting the KwaZulu-Natal province, including inclusive economic growth, innovation, and sustainable development.
Participants expressed optimism about the strengthened partnership, noting that the renewed agreement and strategic alignment would enhance research impact, foster innovation, and contribute meaningfully to regional development.
The meeting concluded with a key resolution of renewing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNIZULU and MKRI, which expired at the end of 2025. This renewal reflects a shared commitment to deepen collaboration, facilitate the implementation of joint projects, and strengthen ongoing partnerships. This renewal reaffirms the commitment of both institutions to sustained collaboration and provides a formal framework to advance joint initiatives and long-term strategic goals.
