The Department of Zoology is a dynamic group of academics, post-graduate students and research fellows. Research strengths include estuarine ecology, ecotoxicology, fisheries science and aquaculture. With large and ecologically significant estuaries and coastal lakes such as Lake St Lucia, Richards Bay Harbour, Mhlathuze Estuary and Kosi Bay on our doorstep, it is a logical and rewarding research focus area. Recent postgraduate research projects focus on ecophysiology of estuarine biota and the close link between ecotoxicology and ecophysiology in stressed estuarine environments, as well as community ecology of coastal estuarine and freshwater environments. We also have an operational aquaculture facility in the department, which focuses on freshwater fishery research.
