The Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering consists of fifteen  (15) Departments, one of which offers the Foundation programme while others offer the BSc degree in thirty-seven (37) double majors. The Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering is also known for its attractiveness to students from different countries although the majority are from South Africa

WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

The vision of the Faculty is to be the leading Faculty in a rural based comprehensive University providing quality programs through teaching, research and community engagement.  The Faculty boasts of the finest ladies and gentlemen of the academic profession in various fields of Science, who are working together to develop skilled graduates for the private and public work places at home and abroad.

Our Faculty consists of fifteen (15) Departments, one of which offers the Foundation programme while others offer the BSc degree in thirty-seven (37) double majors.The double majors are complemented by a number of focused degrees in Agriculture, Consumer and Nursing Sciences.The Department of Agriculture offers three focused Agricultural degrees (Agribusiness, Agronomy and Animal Science).The Faculty also offer post graduate studies leading to the award of MSc and PhDs in Science, Agriculture and Nursing.

Welcome to the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering’s website.

We are delighted to extend a warm welcome to all visitors who have taken the time to explore our website. As you navigate through our pages, we hope you will discover the full spectrum of teaching, learning, research, innovation and community work that our staff and students are engaged in.

The Faculty believes in educating and producing competitive, globally relevant, quality African scientists with future-focused competencies. To achieve this, we embrace the spirit of inquiry and exploration. Our academic community is driven by a passion for understanding the intricacies of the natural world, unravelling its mysteries, and pushing the boundaries of human knowledge. We pride ourselves on fostering an environment that nurtures curiosity, critical thinking, and scientific discovery.

Our Faculty consists of fifteen (15) Departments with a range of disciplines represented from both the Natural and Physical Sciences. Our academics are experts in their respective fields and are committed to sharing their expertise to educate the next generation of scientists. Our diverse academic programs provide undergraduate students with a solid foundation in their chosen fields. We encourage qualifying students to delve into rigorous scientific inquiry during postgraduate research studies. Our Faculty Handbooks contain the full spectrum of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications on offer.

Our students have access to our laboratories, which serve as hives of innovation and experimentation. Our students and researchers are actively involved in ground-breaking studies and projects that address some of the most pressing global challenges. Whether it’s exploring alternative energy sources, combating climate change, deciphering the mysteries of the universe, or unravelling the complexities of the human body, we are at the forefront of scientific advancements.

The Faculty is proud to be home to one of the thriving Research Chairs in South Africa in addition to various other pockets of research excellence. The Chair in Nanotechnology is hosted in our Department of Chemistry as UNIZULU’s contribution to the South African Research Chair initiative. The Centre of Excellence in Mobile e-services, hosted in our Computer Science department is sponsored by two industry giants namely Telkom SA and Huawei Africa and is among sixteen other such Centres in the country. We are also proud of our relationships with iThemba Labs in Cape Town, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Durban, the Agricultural Research Council, the Medical Research Councils, the National Research Foundation as well as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research for significant support with research equipment, student sponsorships and collaborators as strategic backbones behind our postgraduate study programmes.

Beyond the boundaries of the classroom and the laboratory, our Faculty is engaged with our local community and beyond. We actively seek collaborations with industry partners, government agencies, and other institutions, aiming to translate our scientific expertise into practical solutions that can benefit society.
