JINR has a long history with the University of Zululand especially with the Department of Physics.
The recent short visit by the two prominent Russian physicist, Dr Grzegorz Kaminiski and Dr Andrey Bezbah, was to widen the scope of research to other departments in the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering.
It was revealed in this productive gathering that the physicists ‘uses physics methods to solve problems in other disciplines of science using world-class facilities that are readily available at JINR”.
To give an example, researchers from Biochemistry and Microbiology can collaborate with JINR scientists in radiobiology to pursue research on the effect of radiation in living micro-organisms or the Botany department can also do research to identify heavy ions in plants using, for instance, neutron activation method. Other departments like Chemistry, Hydrology, Computer Science etc., can benefit through such collaboration between UNIZULU and JINR. This is also supported by the NRF-JINR agreement given that South Africa is an associate member of JINR.
