The Department of Agriculture officially opened its doors in 1988 headed by Prof Pauer and assisted Mr. G Wilsenach. It started by offering a 4-year general BSc Agriculture degree, which was structured such that in the first year, the students took first year subjects for a general BSc and attended agricultural subjects at in department in subsequent years.

The first intake into the BSc Agriculture comprised of 5 students. By 1991 the intake into the BSc Agriculture had increased to 20. Meanwhile, in 1989, the department had started offering a BPaed Agric Degree for teachers. Two students registered in 1989 for this degree, and the intake grew to 15 students in 1996. The degree was discontinued in 2000.

In 2001, the department introduced three specialized four-year BSc Agriculture degree programs, wiz; BSc Agric Animal Science, BSc Agric Agribusiness and BSc Agric Agronomy. The Department currently offers these three degrees at undergraduate level as well as MSc and PhD degrees at post graduate level. Now, the Department has an annual student intake of 90 students and an Academic staff compliment of 12 permanent staff.

Job opportunities for our graduates abound in various sectors of the economy. Employers include the government’s Department of Agriculture, various private agricultural companies, seed houses, research institutions, farming companies, fertilizer companies, banks, farm estates, cattle feedlots/feed yards and dairy establishments
