Gingindlovu Community Project
A community project at Gingindlovu, North of KZN is currently with the main objectives being “Using indigenous agricultural systems for rural development and improvement livelihood” The initial phase of the project surveyed “Demographic distribution of livestock and crop production systems at Gingindlovu community and its implication to community development and livelihood improvement”. The initial phase project graduated four final year honours students and has submitted a papers for peer reviewed communications. Micro projects (on alternative indigenous feed sources for ruminants and sustainable layers’ micro-production systems to supplement diet protein in community households) have been designed based on the initial phase data analysis and implementation phase is ongoing since January 2015 and the next phase will be evaluated in 2016. The project is expected to expand and continue for as many years as possible since its objective is to improve social standards, livelihood, development and self-employment to the community. The project is currently accommodating 4 more honours students in 2015 which is a requirement for the completion of their degrees. Over 100 community members have volunteered to participate the community project which can only accommodate 5 farmers at the beginning but could grow to more than 60 people if current farmers are successful which will eventually lead to the promotion of emanating farmers next year.
