About Us

The Department of Nursing Science at the University of Zululand in the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering was initiated in 1981. Training commenced, firstly with training Nurse Educators and Nurse Administrators on a parttime basis. In 1984, the Bachelor Curationis Degree accepted the first students, and in 1988, the first Honours Bachelor Curationis Degree was commenced which was followed by the Master Degree in Nursing in 1992.

The Department has a proud heritage of training nurses. Currently, an undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing (R174) accredited by the South African Nursing Council, the postgraduate Master’s in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Degrees accredited by the Council of Higher Education (CHE) and registered with the South African Qualifications Framework (SAQA) are offered in the department.  

Teaching and learning of the nursing programmes are tailored in a manner aligned with the challenges of the 21st century and is linked to the professional diversity of care and practices of best evidence. The Department is committed to teach using learning and teaching that is supported by technology to achieve excellent outcomes for the diverse student population who will become new generation of professional nurses and midwives in the healthcare fraternity.
