Biography:

Dr Linda is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Nursing Science at the University of Zululand. She is a teacher by nature who was naturally inducted to a teaching practice when she voluntarily taught nursing and medical students allocated in ICU. Dr Linda commenced her formal teaching as a tutor for the Nursing Bridging Course at the Institute of Nursing (UKZN). After pursuing a master’s degree in Nursing Education which qualified her to teach at a Higher Education Platform, she began professional formal teaching practice in 2006 through 2008 as an undergraduate part time lecturer at UWC. From 2008-2010 where she taught in different year levels including postgraduate nursing education programme. In 2010 she was employed as a permanent teaching staff member after which she was trusted with additional academic responsibilities. Dr Linda was then assigned to coordinate the Postgraduate Nursing Education Master Course which she coordinated from 2010-2016 which was until she changed employment from UWC to UNIZULU where she is currently employed.
Before assuming her professional teaching practice, she worked as a double-qualified professional registered at King Edward viii Hospital in Durban where she had studied general nursing and midwifery from 1981-1984. When she qualified, she self-regulated and facilitated clinical skills for nurses and medical students who were newly allocated in the ICU; Due to love for teaching she did part time teaching as preceptor for a Bridging course at and coordinator for a distance Midwifery Programme in UKZN. Few years later i.e., 2005 – 2007 she registered for full time master’s in nursing education. After which she began her professional teaching career at the University of the Western Cape. She completed her PhD titled Generation of Practice Theory for Teaching–Learning of Spiritual Care in the Undergraduate Nursing Programme in South Africa.
Dr Linda has is involved in facilitation of students’ learning in both undergraduate and post graduate levels. In her current employment at UNIZULU she also teaches in the Post Basic Professional Degree. She has participated in curriculum development process at UWC and UZ nursing institutions. She has participated in the planning and execution of then 1st International Scientific Teaching and Learning Conference in 2012.

Fundamentals of Nursing (SNFN111 & 112), General Nursing Science (SNGN211 & 212), Community Health Nursing Science (SNCH211 &212) Ethos of Nursing and professional Practice (SNEP) Didactics of Teaching and Assessment in nursing (SNED111 & SNED112) and Theories of Nursing Education SNED211 & Curriculum Development SNED212, Fundamentals of Nursing Education SNED122.

Qualifications:

PhD in Nursing Education (UWC); Master’s in Nursing Education (UKZN), Diploma in N. Ed and CHN (UNISA), Diploma in General Nursing & Diploma in Midwifery (KEH viii Nursing). Intensive Nursing Care (Wentworth Nursing College). Moderator (InTuition Service Provider).

  • 2021: Received the DVC’s Excellent Teaching and Learning Awards (Coupled with a framed Certificate and a R50,000.00 cash check
  • 2020: Received a Certificate of Appreciation from Scientifist 101 Programme for sustained FM Radio Health talks and education to various communities.
  • 2018: Received an Award from St Marys Nursing College for support and collegial relationship.
  • 2010: Received a First Price for Best Poster from FUNDISA & NEA Conference which was held in Cape Town

Research interests: 

Current Project: 

  • She is Passionate about working with local communities of King Cetshwayo District to redress health issues. She has interest in transformative teaching & learning strategies and approaches. Currently she is working on a collaborated CE Project using PALAR strategy to engage different communities on healthy living and lifestyle, lifestyle modification as conservative and healthier ways to prevent complication in people with Diabetes Mellitus. The use of PALAR allows practice of quality health promotion as well as ethically sound health education.

Past Projects:

  • Dr N Linda has participated in a project that investigated the effects of increased student numbers on the undergraduate nursing programme at UWC. The project further tracked student’s employability after completion of their R425 Education & Training Programme.
  • Dr Linda has also conducted as a co-researcher with her colleagues a systematic review project on institutional collaborations which was registered and published by Joanna Brigs in 2015.

 Current Projects:

  • Currently, Dr Linda is a leading researcher of a Community Engagement (CE) project which will collaborate with the selected community to develop a self-paced-self-care strategy for managing Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus and Viral Infections/ COVID19 by rural. Participating in research the following research projects in collaboration with other institutions:
  • Experiences of teenage mothers on teaching and learning during theCovid-19 lockdown in the rural communities of South Africa: In collaboration with University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN).
  • Intervention to support HIV self-management among youth living in rural area in SA: In collaboration with University of Stellenbosch (US).

GRANTS

  • Received the 2021 DVCs Excellent Teaching & Learning Award from the University of Zululand.
  • Received DVC Funding to support PhD Project in 2013-2014 at the University of the Western Cape.
  • Received a “Laptop” as an Awards for dedicated participation in the institutional eLearning initiative in 2009. This acknowledgement was honored by Dr Juliet Stoltenkamp <jstoltenkamp@uwc.ac.za> as ITC Director for my pparticipating on Online Teaching and Learning Platform using Sakai eLearning Teaching Platform at UWC.
