Biography 

Dr Madlala is Senior Lecturer under the Department of Nursing Science at the University of Zululand. He has worked as a Theatre Scrub nurse, Recovery room nurse, Lecturer at Netcare Education and Lecturer at South African Military Health Services. He also worked as Assistant Nurse Manager in the public sector and as Lecturer at Ga-Rankuwa Nursing College and Free State School of Nursing. Madlala has been a Clinical Coordinator from 2017-2019. In 2020, to date he is a departmental Teaching and Learning coordinator. Dr Madlala is involved in teaching undergraduate, post-basic courses and supervision of postgraduate research at the University of Zululand. He is a clinical coordinator for all levels at the University of Zululand. Dr Madlala is actively involved in assessment and moderation of examinations at the South African Nursing Council. He is an external moderator for Kwa-Zulu Natal College of Nursing and a board member at CJM Nursing College Campus.

(General Nurse, Community Nurse, Psychiatric Nurse and Accoucheur) (FSSON), Avanced University Diploma in Nursing Education and Management (Unisa), Honours in Health studies (Unisa), B-Tech Occupational Health Nursing (TUT), M-Tech Nursing (DUT), D-Nursing (DUT) is a Nursing Management lecturer in the Discipline of Nursing.

He has 5 years’ experience as an Assistant Director Nurse Manager (Night Supervisor) in a government hospital. His experienced is focused on the planning, directing and provision of staffing in a nursing service. He has over 11 years teaching experience in nursing. While studying towards his Doctoral Degree at Durban University of Technology he received a grant from Democratic Nurses Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA).

He completed his Doctorate in 2017.

He has had a varied career, commencing his training at Free State School of Nursing (Welkom); studied Advanced Diploma in Nursing Education and Management and Honours in Health Studies at UNISA; he further studied Bachelor of Technology Degree in Occupational Health Nursing at TUT; taught at Ga-Rankuwa Nursing College and Free Sate School of Nursing, he studied M-Tech in Nursing at DUT and taught at University of Zululand and completed his Doctoral Degree at DUT while teaching at University of Zululand.

Dr Madlala presented his Master Degree research paper at Durban University of Technology and at the Free State Department of Health research days’ conferences in 2015.

During 2007 he completed HOD course presented at Netcare Education, 2013 he attended and passed Monitoring and Evaluation course at University of Pretoria, 2016 attended and completed a SoTL course and Doctoral postgraduate student course presented by Stellenbosch University and in 2016 he completed a Postgraduate research supervision course presented by Rhodes University.

He has actively encouraged the use of simulation skills laboratory in clinical teaching and learning of undergraduate students in which he is a holder of a certificate in Simulation for Health Professions Educators (UFS).

Lecture’s the following modules: 

General Nursing Science, Social Sciences, Midwifery Nursing, Nursing Management and Ethos and Professional Practice.

Doctor of Nursing (D-DUT), Master of Technology (Nursing Science) (DUT), Honours in Health Sciences Studies (Unisa), B-Tech in Occupational Health Nursing (TUT), Dip. In General, (Community, Psychiatry) and Midwifery nursing (FSSoN). Certificate in Operating Room Theatre. Assessor and Moderator.

Research interests: 

His niche area is maternal and reproductive health care. His Master project was focussed on young males’ involvement in reproductive health whereby and article was published and Doctoral study looked into student accoucheurs acceptance into maternal healthcare and the guidelines to support them in maternal health care during their training were developed. Four articles were published in a DHET accredited journals. He has co-supervised a Master project which focused on deinstitutionalisation of mental healthcare user into Primary Health Care, and an article was published in DHET accredited Journal. He also successfully supervised two Master projects which one focused on the use of clinical skills laboratory in teaching clinical practice to student nurses; and the other project focussed on ANC attendance by pregnant women. Dr Madlala is currently supervising six Master and one PHD students.
