Biography:

Xolani is a midwifery specialist lecturing Midwifery Nursing and Newborn Care at the Department of Nursing Science since March 2024. He is in a possession of vast experience of clinical midwifery and facilitating it, gained from diverse institutions such as; Butterworth hospital, Motherwell Community Health Centre (MCHC), Western Cape College of Nursing (WCCN), Lilitha College of Nursing and Sefako Makgatho Health Science University (SMU). Xolani is a primary facilitator for Midwifery Nursing Science modules, he further supervises and co-supervises master’s students’ and is also an active midwifery external moderator for universities and colleges in South Africa.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Nursing Science from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Education from Stellenbosch University (SU) (Cum Laude)
  • University Diploma in Health Service Management from North-West University (NWU)
  • Master of Nursing in Advanced Clinical Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science from Nelson Mandela University (NMU)

Honours/Awards :  

  • In 2014, Xolani received Henrietta Stockdale Denosa Trophy which is awarded yearly to students whom, after four years of their undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing degree have demonstrated highest degree of professional maturity.

Research interests: 

Xolani’s research interest is Maternal and Newborn health, particularly opportunities for quality improvement. His master’s research work explored the level of childbirth preparedness of first-time mothers. Where it was found that first-time mothers were poorly prepared by midwives for their first-time childbirth experience. Amongst the recommendations of his study was that there should be a standardised process to enhance childbirth preparation for first-time mothers. This work led to the conference presentations; Sensitive midwifery symposium in 2023 and Centering ubuntu health care in society conference held in 2023 at the University of Pretoria (UP). Moreover, the publication of one article titled “Birthing process preparedness of first-time mothers at the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in South Africa: A qualitative research study”.
